THE “WHAT WHY & HOW” OF REVERENCE

From The Family Virtues Guide

WHAT IS REVERENCE?

Reverence is behaving with an awareness that you are always in the presence of creation and that all life is precious. Reverence can be experienced in moments of quiet reflection. It is treating sacred things as very special.

Reverence is showing respect. It is being careful to honor the gifts of life, including other people.

Whether you are in a place of worship or spending time in a place of beauty, reverence is being still and allowing the wonder you feel to shine through.

WHY PRACTICE REVERENCE?

Reverence is a quality of the spirit. It allows you to feel the presence of creation. If you don’t treat things which are sacred to you as they deserve, then the most important things become the same as the most ordinary.

If you had no reverence for living things, you would treat them carelessly instead of revering them as part of creation. If you are too rushed or impatient, unable to still and listen to your heart, you miss one of the most special parts of life.

HOW DO YOU PRACTICE REVERENCE?

Reverence can be experienced in times of prayer, meditation or communion. Everyone needs regular time for reflection. It is the best way for each of us to hear the wisdom which comes from deep inside. Reverence is choosing not to think of anything else. You concentrate your whole being on the sacredness of that moment. Reverence allows you to listen to your heart.

Reverence means entering a time of worship in a quiet, respectful way. Reverence can be expressed in daily acts of kindness for others, especially the people you are closest to. Even a simple act can be sacred if you do it with reverence.

Reverence is an attitude of deep respect for living things. It is taking responsibility by caring for the earth and all the gifts you receive from them it, doing your part to keep it clean and healthy. Reverence comes when you allow yourself to experience beauty. Giving yourself time to enjoy the wonder of nature is one of the best ways to feel your own reverence.
